A trauma-informed approach

22/04/2024 by Robyn Reed Leave a Comment

At Horse Talk, our trauma-informed approach is a framework that recognises the widespread impact of trauma and aims to create an environment that promotes healing and resilience. It involves understanding how trauma affects individuals, the people around them, relationships and choice they feel they need to make in order to survive.

Central to a trauma-informed approach is the recognition that many individuals have experienced trauma and that their behaviors, reactions, and needs may be influenced by these experiences. Instead of asking “What’s wrong with you?” the focus shifts to “What happened to you?” We recognise this and offer you empathy, understanding, and validation of individuals’ experiences.

Key principles of a trauma-informed approach include safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, and empowerment. These guide our principles at Horse Talk in creating environments that prioritise physical and emotional safety, promote transparent and trustworthy communication, offer choices and autonomy, encourage collaboration and partnership, and empower individuals to make decisions that support their well-being.

By adopting a trauma-informed approach, Horse Talk creates supportive and nurturing environments that facilitate healing, recovery, and resilience for those who have experienced trauma. This approach recognises the dignity and worth of every individual and seeks to promote their overall health and well-being.
